Hand and Foot

Three decks, and two piles of thirteen in front of you. One you are playing. The other is sealed, and you cannot look at it until the first one is completely gone.

How it is played

You are dealt two stacks of thirteen. The hand is what you play with. The foot sits untouched, and you may not look at it, until your hand is empty. Then it becomes your new hand and the round carries on.

You build melds of a rank, seven of them makes a pile, and a pile with no wild cards in it counts far more than one propped up with jokers and twos. A full match is four deals and the higher total afterwards wins.

The split is the whole game

This is the one thing Canasta does not have. Getting into your foot is the pivot the whole round turns on, and there are exactly two ways to do it.

Meld away every card with nothing left to discard and your foot opens immediately, the same turn continues, and you do not draw again. Or meld all but one and discard it, in which case your turn ends there and the foot opens at the start of your next one. The first is much better and it is worth planning several turns ahead for.

Two players, no partner, and why

Traditionally this is a four-player partnership game. We built the individual two-player version that the reference rules also document, which means going out needs at least one clean pile and one dirty one and nothing else, since there is no partner to ask permission of.

Where two sourced variants both existed we took the simpler one and wrote down which. That choice is recorded in the app's sources page rather than left for you to discover.

The small things

What you will not find

No advertisements at any point. No account, no email, no sign-up. No timer, no energy, no coins, no daily streak pestering you to come back. This game is part of a single one-time unlock, not a subscription, and nothing in it can be bought again later.
