Oklahoma Gin

Gin rummy where the first upcard decides how close you have to be before you can knock. It is the variant that makes every hand a different problem, and it is the game this app was built around first.

How it is played

Ten cards each, and the top of the stock turned face up. That upcard is offered first to the non-dealer and then to the dealer; if neither wants it, the non-dealer draws from the stock and play begins. From then on every turn is draw one, discard one.

You are arranging your ten cards into runs and sets. When your unmatched cards total little enough, you knock as part of your discard, and your opponent then lays off what they can against your melds before the hand is scored.

Why the upcard matters so much

In ordinary gin you may knock at ten or less, every hand, forever. In Oklahoma the rank of that first upcard sets the number, so one hand lets you knock at nine and the next demands you get to three. A low upcard turns a comfortable hand into a long, careful one.

When the upcard is a spade the hand is worth double. That single rule is enough to change how much risk is worth taking, and it is why the upcard is the first thing good players look at.

Play it in one sitting, or over a week

Live play goes through our own relay, so an iPhone and an Android phone sit at the same table without either of them needing an account.

Correspondence play is the other half. Your opponent takes their turn when they get to it, hours or days later, and you can add an email address if you want to be told. That address is optional, it is the only personal detail anywhere in the app, and you can remove it whenever you like.

Every hand replays exactly from its deal proof and the list of moves made. That is not two features. The proof that the deal was fair and the ability to watch the hand back are the same thing, which is why both exist here and neither is bolted on.

Tournaments

Private tournaments are Gin at the moment. You create one, share the code, and the bracket, the standings and the agreed rules live on our server while the cards stay on the players' devices. A result is only recorded when both players report the same one.
